In swim trunks ocean blue and dripping wet,
A small boy shivered standing at the edge
Of a long dock, afraid they’d need a dredge
To find his body, should his nerve offset
His fear and to the wind he cast his fret.
As hatchlings dread the truth that they must fledge,
So trembled the small boy back from the ledge
Above the water, peering at the threat
From what he’d deemed his safety. Then the call
Rang out again from somewhere just beyond
The wooden pier, “Jump, son! I’m here and all
You need to stay afloat, my word my bond.
All in now! Throw off fear’s entangling thrall!”
With that, the boy dove headfirst in the pond.
